MINNESOTA MICRONET

Installing MacTCP 2.04+ and MacPPP 2.01



If you're not using the Internet Start Kit, but are installing MacTCP and MacPPP, follow the instructions in the sections on MacTCP and MacPPP).

  1. Insert the Internet Starter Kit disk in the disk drive.

  2. Click on the ISKM Installer Icon

  3. Click Continue.

  4. Save the document. Read it now or later. Click Save again.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. You don't want standard install, you want Custom. Click Custom.

  7. Select Generic MacPPP and Apps. Click Install.

  8. Yes, you want to continue.

  9. Install.

  10. Click Restart. The disk will pop out.

Configure MacTCP:

  1. Pull down the Apple menu. Select Control Panels.

  2. Click the MacTCP icon.

  3. Make sure only the PPP icon is highlighted. If it's not, click one on it.

  4. The IP address should be 0.0.0.0 (you can't change it, anyway).

  5. Click More. The following screen will appear:

  6. You only need to change the fields in the Domain Name Server Information box. There is room for 3 rows of domain and IP addresses.

    In the first (top) row, enter: mm.com | 204.73.34.1 | click Default

    A second row should appear. In that row enter: . | 204.73.34.1 | (do not click Default button)
    (that is a period in the first field of the second row)

    A third row should appear. Leave that blank.

    Make sure the SERVER button is selected. Nothing else needs to be changed on this panel.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Close the MacTCP window.

  9. Close the Control Panels window.

  10. To make sure the changes take effect, RESTART YOUR MAC by pulling down the Special menu and selecting Restart.

Configure MacPPP

  1. Find the MacPPP folder.

  2. Open the MacPPP folder.

    Open the Modem Strings file and find the initialization string for your particular modem, if your modem requires one. WRITE DOWN THIS STRING -- YOU WILL NEED IT LATER! If you don't have this file or don't find your modem, listed below are strings f or some of the most common modems used with Macs. Quit the file.

    NOTE: There are no capital letter O's in the init strings below. THEY ARE ALL ZEROES (0).

  3. Pull down the Apple menu and select Control Panels.

  4. Double-click the ConfigPPP icon. The ConfigPPP panel will display.

  5. If you have a Hayes-compatible modem, check the box for Hangup on Close.

  6. Click New.

  7. For the PPP Server Name, type in: MicroNet, click OK

  8. Click Config ...

  9. To set the port speed, we recommend you start at 19200 for a 14.4 modem and 57,600 for a 28.8 modem unless you know for sure that your serial port and modem can operate at a higher speed or your modem information suggests otherwise.

  10. Set the Flow Control. We recommend selecting RTS (DTR) Only, unless your modem information suggests otherwise.

  11. Tone Dial should be selected.

  12. Enter the phone number:

    If on nationwide access, phone number in Minneapolis-St. Paul local dialing area is 612-278-7827

  13. Set the modem initialization string based on your modem type. (This is the string you wrote down or found in the list above)

  14. Click Authentication ...

  15. Enter your username (they call it Auth ID.) and your password. (Most folks will enter just their username. However, if you were told to login with a capital letter P in front of your username to access your PPP account, use the P here. If you were NOT told to login that way, enter just your username.)

  16. Click OK, then click Done.

  17. Close the Config PPP window. Close the Control Panels window.

NOW YOU'RE READY TO TEST YOUR CONNECTION TO MINNESOTA MICRONET:

  1. Find the MacPPP alias icon and double-click on it. If your package doesn't have a MacPPP alias icon, use the Config PPP icon.

  2. Click Open. It should dial the number and make the connection.

  3. When the PPP authentication message from server says Login Succeeded, click OK.

NOW YOU'RE READY TO CONFIGURE AND TEST EUDORA

  1. Double-click on the Eudora icon in the ISKM folder. (But don't do a Hard Close or a Soft Close in the Config PPP panel -- that will disconnect you.)

  2. Pull down the Special menu, and select Configuration...

  3. Enter the POP account: yourusername@mailhost.mm.com (For yourusername, everyone will enter just their username. Even if you were told to login with a capital letter P in front of your username to access your PPP connection, DO NOT use the P her e.)

  4. Enter your real name or the name you want to appear on E-mail messages.

  5. The Connection Method MacTCP should already be selected.

  6. SMTP can be left blank.

  7. Return address: yourusername@mm.com

    (Again, for yourusername, everyone will enter just their username. Even if you were told to login with a capital letter P in front of your username to access your PPP connection, DO NOT use the P here.) If you have your own domain name, you may use it here in place of mm.com If you have an E-mail alias, you may use it here for yourusername.

  8. Check for Mail, Ph Server and Dialup Username can all be left blank.

  9. Click OK.

  10. Pull down Message. Select New Message.

  11. To: info@mm.com

  12. Subject: test

  13. Click Send. The test message will be delivered to info@mm.com. In a few seconds, your mailbox will receive an automated reply.

  14. To see if you received the automated reply, pull down File and select Check Mail. Enter your password and click OK. It should transfer a message to your mailbox and display a chicken that says, "You have new mail." Click OK. If you got this f ar, Eudora is working and so is your PPP connection!

  15. Pull down File and select Quit to exit Eudora.

To Configure Your Browser:

Set your browser so it starts with http://www.mm.com/ as the home page. If you're using Netscape, pull down the Options menu and select either General Preferences or Network Preferences, depending on the version you're using. Find the section that says Starts With and make sure Home Page is selected. Change the URL in that field to ours. If your browser lets you read mail and news through it, pull down the Options menu, select Mail and News Preferences and use the settings that follow.

Mail:

Set the POP server to pop.mm.com Set the SMTP server to smtp.mm.com If your mail reader asks for a POP account, set it to yourusername@smtp.mm.com (For yourusername enter your 3 to 8 character username.)

For your user ID, enter your 3 to 8 character username.

For your Email address, enter yourusername@mm.com Even if you have your own domain name, enter yourusername@mm.com

For your return Email address, enter yourusername@mm.com If you have your own domain name, enter it in place of mm.com If you have an E-mail alias, you may enter it here.

Test your mail by sending an E-mail message to info@mm.com with test as the subject. In a few minutes, you should receive a copy of our Overview. If this happens, you're both sending and receiving E-mail.

Use the default mail directory.

To Configure Your Newsreader:

News server or NNTP server is: news.mm.com

Use the default news directory.

To Configure FTP (Fetch):

Host is ftp.mm.com If you're ftp-ing something into or from your public_html directory, use your regular username and password. If you're ftp-ing something from our local Mac archive, enter anonymous for the username and your email address (youruser name@mm.com) for your password.

WHEN YOU'RE ALL DONE, DON'T FORGET TO DISCONNECT MacPPP:

  1. Find the Config PPP window.

  2. Select Hard Close. DON'T USE SOFT CLOSE unless you've read your instruction book and understand how it works. If you only have Close, select that.

  3. Close the Config PPP window.

If You Have a Problem:

Do a proper shutdown of your computer (and turn off your modem if it's an external). After about 10 seconds, turn your computer and modem back on. This solves about 90% of problems. Check that all the settings, including your username and password, are correct, then try dialing in again. If you still have a problem or get an error message, note the problem/message, then call our office (651-681-8018). If you're online and just have a question, you can E-mail help@mm.com

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE ON ALL YOUR COMPUTERS. MAKE SURE TO RUN IT AND TO UPDATE IT FREQUENTLY!!

WHEN YOUR SET-UP IS COMPLETE, DON'T FORGET TO BACK-UP YOUR SYSTEM
