CONFIGURING WINDOWS 2000

  1. Click the Start menu, then click Settings, then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double click Network and Dial Up Connections.

  3. Click Make New Connection.

  4. The Network Connection Wizard should display. Click Next.

  5. Put the dot next to Dial up to the Internet. Click Next.

  6. Put the dot next to I want to set up my Internet connection manually. Click Next.

  7. Put the dot next to I connect using a phone line and modem. Click Next.

  8. If your modem doesn't display by name, pull down the arrow on the pull down menu and find it. Click Next.

  9. In the Area Code field, type in the area code of the local access number you want your modem to dial.

  10. In the Telephone number field, enter the phone number for that local dialup number. A list of local dial-up phone numbers is available by taking the Access Numbers link on our home page.

  11. Click the Advanced button.

  12. Click the Connection tab.

  13. Put the dot next to PPP. Leave the LCP box checked. Put the dot next to None for Log on Procedure. Click OK.

  14. Click on the Address tab. (If you don't see it, you may need to click on the Advanced tab.)

  15. Under IP address, put the dot next to Internet Service Provider automatically provides one.

  16. Under DNS server address, put the dot next to My ISP automatically provides a Domain Name Server (DNS) address. Click OK. Click Next.

  17. In the User name field, enter your login username. This is your 3 to 8 character username with @mm.com appended to the end of it. For example: johndoe@mm.com In the Password field, enter your password. Please remember usernames and passwords are case sensitive; always lower case. Click Next.

  18. It will ask for a name for the connection. Type Minnesota MicroNet. Click Next.

  19. If you want to set up your Internet Mail Account (this usually means Outlook/Outlook Express), put the dot next to Yes. If you select Yes, follow the instructions below.

  20. Enter your Display Name. This is your name as it will appear in e-mail messages.

  21. Since you already have an e-mail address with us, enter that e-mail address in the E-mail Address field. Click Next.

  22. POP3 should display in the "My incoming mail server is a" line. Under Incoming Mail Server, enter pop.mm.com Under Outgoing Mail Server, enter smtp.mm.com Click Next.

    In Account Name, enter your 3 to 8 character username in lower case (do NOT add @mm.com to the end of it; for example: johndoe). In Password, enter your password. It's up to you if you want to check the Remember Password box. Leave Logon using Secure Password Authentication UNchecked. Click Next.

    If you want to connect right away, leave the box checked. Click Finish.

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ...

Make sure the phone number, DNS info, username and password were entered correctly. If not, correct all mistakes.

To check the phone number:

  1. On your Desktop, right-click just once on the My Network Places icon, slide down to Properties and left- click just once.
  2. Right-click just once on the icon for Minnesota MicroNet, slide down to Properties and left- click just once.
  3. Under the General tab is where you find the name of your modem, and the Phone Number. Make any changes here. Click OK.

To check the DNS information:

  1. Pull up the Start menu, go to Settings, then select Network and Dial-up Connection
  2. Right-click just once on the icon for Minnesota MicroNet, slide down to Properties and left- click just once.
  3. Click once on the Networking tab.
  4. Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to highlight it. Do NOT uncheck the box next to it. Click on Properties. For most customers, the dot should be next to Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  5. Click OK. You may also need to click OK again.

To check the username and password:

  1. On your Desktop, right-click just once on the My Network Places icon, slide down to Properties and left- click just once.
  2. DOUBLE-click on the icon for Minnesota MicroNet icon.
  3. A Connect screen will display. Make sure the username and password are correct. It's up to you if the Save Password box is checked. To dial in, click Dial.

If all settings are correct, do a proper shutdown of your computer (and turn off your modem if it's an external modem). After about 10 seconds, turn your computer and modem back on. This solves about 90% of problems. Try dialing in again. If you still have a problem or get an error message, note the problem/message, then call our office (651-681-8018). PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE ON ALL YOUR COMPUTERS. MAKE SURE TO RUN IT AND UPDATE IT FREQUENTLY!! COMPUTER VIRUSES CAN BE ACQUIRED THROUGH OTHER MEANS THAN E-MAIL.
