- Select the Start button, go to
HELP, then find the listing for Connecting. Under that,
find the listing for To The Internet, click once to highlight, then
click Display. Click How to connect to the Internet using
Dial-Up
Networking, and follow their instructions for how to connect using
Dialup
Networking.
-
Remember, you already have an Internet provider (us!), so you
DON'T choose the Microsoft Network as your Internet provider.
We use server assigned IP
Addresses and Name Server Addresses. (For reference, though, the Primary
DNS is 204.73.34.1 Secondary DNS is 204.73.34.12)
- Pick the one that's nearest you, physically, but if you don't think
you're getting good connects on that number, try the others and use the
one that works best. DSL folks using dialup should dial the 952-808-2480
number.) Don't enter an area code in the Area Code field. Enter it in the
Telephone Number field. You do NOT want to use a terminal window
after logon. Please Note: Your login username should have @mm.com
appended to it. For example: username@mm.com This is only for logging in.
Your mailbox name should not have the @mm.com on the end of it.
Once that is done:
- Press the Start button and choose Settings,
then Control Panel.
- Double-click on the icon called Internet, if you have
one. It looks like a world with a yellow telephone in front of it.
- Older versions of Win95 will display Use AutoDial.
Make sure there is NO X in front of it.
- Select the Advanced tab. We don't use a Proxy Server
for Web browsing. Click OK. It
should take you back to Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network icon.
- Listed in the window should at least be:
Client for Microsoft Networks
Dialup Adapter
TCP/IP
If any of those 3 are not displayed in the window,
Add them. If you are on a LAN, your configuration may be
somewhat different - instead of TCP/IP you may have TCP/IP - Dialup
Adapter or something similar, this is fine. If you have questions
about how any of the Win95 settings affect your LAN connection, ask
your LAN administrator.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Adapter and choose
Bindings. Make sure that ONLY TCP/IP is checked and press
OK.
- Also, click once on Client for Microsoft Networks. In the
field under Primary Network Logon, it should display Client for
Microsoft Networks. Now click once on Dialup Adapter. In
the field under Primary Network Logon, it should display Client for
Microsoft Networks. Now click once on TCP/IP. In the field
under Primary Network Logon, it should display Client for Microsoft
Networks.
- With TCP/IP still highlighted, select the Properties
button.
TCP/IP Properties:
- There will be 6 tabs up at the top. You need to check the
settings for each. Simply click once on the desitred tab, check the
setttings, then go to the next tab. DO NOT select OK
until after you have checked ALL the settings.
- Obtain IP address automatically should be
checked.
- Select the WINS Configuration tab.
- Check Disable WINS Resolution
- Make sure Use DHCP for WINS Resolution is NOT
checked.
- Select the Gateway tab.
- Select the DNS Configuration tab.
- Check Enable DNS
- Enter your 3-8 character username for Host.
- Even if you have your own domain name, enter mm.com
for Domain.
- Add 204.73.34.1 and 204.73.34.12 to the DNS Server
Search Order.
- Add mm.com to the Domain suffix search order.
- Select the Bindings tab. There should be a checkmark
next to Client for Microsoft Networks.
- Now you can OK your way all the way out. At some
point, it will ask you to restart your computer. Do so.
Dial-Up Network Settings:
- Press the Start button and choose Programs,
then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking. Or,
double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- Skip this step if you have already made a new connection for
Minnesota MicroNet. Otherwise, choose Make New Connection and
name it "MicroNet". Follow the instructions you are given on the
screen.
- Click once on the icon for Minnesota MicroNet (you may
have named it MicroNet or something similar). Pull down the
File menu. Choose Properties.
- Click on the Configure button. The Port should be
whatever comm port you're using. Maximum speed depends on your modem,
e.g., 115200 for a 28.8 or 56K modem. There should be no check next
to
Only connect at this speed. Click OK.
- Click on the Connection tab. For Connection
Preferences, 8 data bits, None parity, 1 Stop Bits. For Call
Preferences, the top 2 should be checked.
- Click on the Port Settings button. There should be a
check next to Use FIFO buffers. Click OK.
- Click the Advanced button. There should be a check next
to Use Error Control and Compress Data. There should be a
check next to Use Flow Control, and a dot next to Hardware
(RTS/CTS). Modulation type is standard. Extra settings should be
blank. No check next to record a log file. Click OK.
- Click on the Options tab. Nothing should be checked except
Display Modem Status. Click OK.
- Next, choose Server Type. The TYPE OF DIAL-UP SERVER
should be: PPP, Windows95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
- Under Advanced Options only check ENABLE SOFTWARE
COMPRESSION.
- Under Allowed Network Protocols only check TCP/IP.
- Now choose TCP/IP SETTINGS
- Check SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS.
- Check SPECIFY NAME SERVER ADDRESSES. If the
values for
Primary and Secondary DNS are 0.0.0.0, you will need to change them.
Enter the following:
Primary DNS: 204.73.34.1
Secondary DNS: 204.73.34.12
Primary WINS: 0.0.0.0
Secondary WINS: 0.0.0.0
- Check both USE IP HEADER COMPRESSION and USE
DEFAULT GATEWAY.
- Press OK. Press OK again. You should
be done at this
point.
- Exit any open windows and restart Win95.
You can now dial into our system. Either double click
on the MicroNet icon and select Connect, or make a Shortcut to MicroNet
icon and use that. When the connection is established, minimize the
window, then find the icon of your choice and double click it. Once
connected, open up your Web browser, e-mail, news groupe, etc.
TO LOG OFF:
Click on the MicroNet at the bottom of the screen. Select
Disconnect.

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ...
|
Make sure the username, password and phone number were entered correctly.
If not, correct all mistakes.
If all settings are correct, do a proper shutdown of your computer (and
turn off your modem if it's an external modem). After about 10 seconds,
turn your computer and modem back on. This solves about 90% of problems.
Try dialing in again. If you still have a problem or get an error message,
note the problem/message, then call our office (651-681-8018). If you're
online and just have a question, you can E-mail help@mm.com
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANTI-VIRUS
SOFTWARE ON ALL YOUR COMPUTERS. MAKE SURE TO RUN IT AND UPDATE IT
FREQUENTLY!! COMPUTER VIRUSES CAN BE ACQUIRED THROUGH OTHER MEANS THAN
E-MAIL.
SOFTWARE TO COMBAT ADWARE AND SPYWARE IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA!
To COMBAT ADWARE, GO HERE.
NOTE: Ad-Aware is the name of the software that corrects the
problem.
Adware is the bad guy; it's not what you want. Yes, the
names are
very close. A good way to remember is: You're aware you need Ad-Aware.
TO
COMBAT SPYWARE, GO HERE.
