Under Type a name for the computer you are
dialing, you can either leave it as My Connection or change it
to something you'll recognize as your connection to us when you see the
name. Examples would be: Minnesota MicroNet, MM.COM, My MM.COM
Connection, etc. Under Select a device, make sure your modem is
displayed. Click Next. Enter the area code your computer will be
dialing in the Area Code field. Enter the telephone number your
computer will be dialing in the Telephone number field.
Pick the one that's nearest you, physically, but if you don't think
you're getting good connects on that number, you can try the other
numbers later and use the
one that works best.
Country or
region code should be United States of America. Click
Next.
Click Finish.
When you see the icon with the name you selected for your connection to
us, right click just once on it, slide down into
Properties,
then left click just once. Remove the Area Code from the
Area
Code field and enter it in the Telephone number field in front
of the phone number. (Yes, this seems a bit confusing, but this will
prevent your computer from putting a "1" in front of the area code when it
dials -- and prevent you from being charged for making a local call --
just in case your computer doesn't have the fix for this.)
Uncheck the
box next to Use area code and Dialing Properties. Make sure your
modem is displayed by name under Connect using. Click on Server
Types. Under Type of Dial-Up Server:, it should say
PPP: Internet, WIndows NT Server, Windows 98 or 95. Under
Advanced options:, only Enable software compression should
be checked. Under Allowed network protocols, only TCP/IP
should be checked. Click on TCP/IP Settings. Unless your Network
Admin has advised otherwise, the dot should be
next to Server assigned IP address and Server assigned name
server addresses. Both boxes at the bottom should be checked. Click
OK.
In the Windows Help, screen go to the section
titled, What's Next and click on My connection is set up.
Go to step 7..
STEP 7: When you reach step 7, you're finished and ready to
dial in. However, you need to restart your computer first. Close
out of all applications, pull up the Start menu, and select
Shutdown. Put the dot next to Restart and click OK.
Once your computer has restarted, you can now dial into our system.
Either double-click on My Computer, double-click on Dial-Up
Networking, double-click on the icon for us and select Connect,
or make a Shortcut on your desktop and use that. Or, your computer may be
configured to dial in when you open up an application such as your Web
browser or e-mail client. Make sure your username is in lower case and
has @mm.com on the end of it. For example: johndoe@mm.com Make sure your
password is in lower case as well. It's up to you if you select the
Remember Password option or not.
