CONFIGURING WINDOWS 98

  1. Click the Start menu, go to HELP, then find the listing for Connecting. Under that, find the listing for To The Internet:

Underneath To The Internet, click once on using Dial-Up Working, then click Display. You'll be basically be following the instructions provided. On the right, click once on Getting an Internet Account.

STEP 1: Since you already have an Internet account with us, take the elevator down to the section titled, What's Next and click on I have an Internet account. Go to step 2..

STEP 2: If you modem isn't set up, click on the Click here to set up your modem. Once you've finished setting up your modem, or if your modem was already set up to begin with, go to the section titled, What's Next and click on The modem is set up. Go to step 3..

STEP 3: On your desktop, double click on My Computer. If you don't see Dial-Up Networking, follow Steps 2 through 4 to add it. Once it's added, or if you already see Dial-Up Networking, in the Windows Help, screen go to the section titled, What's Next and click on Dial-Up Networking is installed. Go to step 4..

STEP 4: Click on Click here to look at the Network properties.

If you don't see TCP/IP or TCP/IP - > Dial-Up Adapter, click Add, click Protocol, then click Add. Click on Microsoft, then click TCP/IP. Click OK.

Once it's added, or if you already see TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter, make sure Client for Microsoft Networks and Dial-Up Adapter are in the window under The following network components are installed. If not, add them just like you added TCP/IP, only select Client or Adapter instead of Protocol. If all three items are in that window, click once on TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter and make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is displayed under Primary Network Logon:, then click once on Dial-Up Adapter, then Properties. Click on the Bindings tab and make sure the box next to TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is checked. Click OK. In the Windows Help, screen go to the section titled, What's Next and click on The adapter is bound to TCP/IP. Go to step 5..

STEP 5: Click on Click here to display the Network dialog box if it isn't already displayed on your screen. Click once on TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter, then click once on Properties. If a box displays that says, "You have asked to change..." don't worry about the box; just click OK. The dot should be next to Obtain an IP address automatically. Click on the Bindings tab. Unless your Network Admin has advised otherwise, UNcheck the box next to File and printer sharing. Click on DNS Configuration. Put the dot next to Disable DNS Click on Advanced. Under Property it should either say None or Allow Binding to ATM. Click on the Gateway tab. Unless your Network Admin has advised otherwise, both boxes should be blank. Click on WINS Configuration. The dot should be next to Disable WINS Resolution. Click on NetBIOS. The box next to I want to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP should be UNchecked, or if it is checked, it should be greyed out. Click OK. Click OK again. If your computer asks if you want to restart it now, no, you do not. You'll do that later.

In the Windows Help, screen go to the section titled, What's Next and click on My TCP/IP information is entered. Go to step 6..

STEP 6: On your desktop, double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking. Double-click on Make New Connection.

Under Type a name for the computer you are dialing, you can either leave it as My Connection or change it to something you'll recognize as your connection to us when you see the name. Examples would be: Minnesota MicroNet, MM.COM, My MM.COM Connection, etc. Under Select a device, make sure your modem is displayed. Click Next. Enter the area code your computer will be dialing in the Area Code field. Enter the telephone number your computer will be dialing in the Telephone number field. Pick the one that's nearest you, physically, but if you don't think you're getting good connects on that number, you can try the other numbers later and use the one that works best.

Country or region code should be United States of America. Click Next.

    Click Finish.

When you see the icon with the name you selected for your connection to us, right click just once on it, slide down into Properties, then left click just once. Remove the Area Code from the Area Code field and enter it in the Telephone number field in front of the phone number. (Yes, this seems a bit confusing, but this will prevent your computer from putting a "1" in front of the area code when it dials -- and prevent you from being charged for making a local call -- just in case your computer doesn't have the fix for this.) Uncheck the box next to Use area code and Dialing Properties. Make sure your modem is displayed by name under Connect using. Click on Server Types. Under Type of Dial-Up Server:, it should say PPP: Internet, WIndows NT Server, Windows 98 or 95. Under Advanced options:, only Enable software compression should be checked. Under Allowed network protocols, only TCP/IP should be checked. Click on TCP/IP Settings. Unless your Network Admin has advised otherwise, the dot should be next to Server assigned IP address and Server assigned name server addresses. Both boxes at the bottom should be checked. Click OK.

In the Windows Help, screen go to the section titled, What's Next and click on My connection is set up. Go to step 7..

STEP 7: When you reach step 7, you're finished and ready to dial in. However, you need to restart your computer first. Close out of all applications, pull up the Start menu, and select Shutdown. Put the dot next to Restart and click OK.

Once your computer has restarted, you can now dial into our system. Either double-click on My Computer, double-click on Dial-Up Networking, double-click on the icon for us and select Connect, or make a Shortcut on your desktop and use that. Or, your computer may be configured to dial in when you open up an application such as your Web browser or e-mail client. Make sure your username is in lower case and has @mm.com on the end of it. For example: johndoe@mm.com Make sure your password is in lower case as well. It's up to you if you select the Remember Password option or not.

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ...

Make sure the username, password and phone number were entered correctly. If not, correct all mistakes.

If all settings are correct, do a proper shutdown of your computer (and turn off your modem if it's an external modem). After about 10 seconds, turn your computer and modem back on. This solves about 90% of problems. Try dialing in again. If you still have a problem or get an error message, note the problem/message, then call our office (651-681-8018). If you're online and just have a question, you can E-mail help@mm.com

PLEASE REMBER . . .

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE ON ALL YOUR COMPUTERS. MAKE SURE TO RUN IT AND UPDATE IT FREQUENTLY!! COMPUTER VIRUSES CAN BE ACQUIRED THROUGH OTHER MEANS THAN E-MAIL.

SOFTWARE TO COMBAT ADWARE AND SPYWARE IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA!

To COMBAT ADWARE, GO HERE.

NOTE: Ad-Aware is the name of the software that corrects the problem. Adware is the bad guy; it's not what you want. Yes, the names are very close. A good way to remember is: You're aware you need Ad-Aware.

TO COMBAT SPYWARE, GO HERE.
